The collection consists of letters written by William Sturges to his brother John beginning in 1844 while John was in college in Princeton, New Jersey. He later went to Yale to study law. The letters describe the social events and family life in Waynesboro, with some mention of politics. In 1852 John was county surveyor for Burke County and there are several letters to him requesting his services. There are also two letters from John's niece Abby, who married Henry Hart Jones. John's regiment was in Portsmouth (Va.) in August 1861 and Roanoke Island (NC) in December 1861. William wrote to him giving local news of the war. There are no letters from John Sturges. Typescripts of all letters are included.
